Coin share

In a temple corridor, two travelers were sitting. By time, there was a heavy rain, and another travller came. The 3rd traveler asked others if he can join them for that night due to heavy rain. The 1st and 2ndtraveler welcomed him. After sometime, 3rd traveler said he is hungry and donot have anything to eat and asked if they have anything to eat.

1st traveler said he has 3 bread pieces and 2nd traveler said he has 5 bread pieces.  So total is 8 bread pieces and wondered how to share equally among them.

The 3rd traveler said he has an idea and that each bread pieces can be cut into 3 small pieces, so that it will amount to 24 small bread pieces and they can share 8 each.

Accepted on the wonderful proposal, they divided equally. And thereafter, they slept.

In the morning while leaving, the 3rd traveler gave them 8 gold coins to be shared between 1st and 2nd traveler.

1st traveler said each can take 4 gold coins, whereas 2nd traveler said, it is to be shared 3 for 1sttraveler and 5 for him. But the sharing was not mutually agreed.

They approached a learned person who after so much thinking, declared 1 gold coin to 1st traveler and 7 to the 2ndtraveler. When refuted by the travelers, he said a logic.

What is the logic?
